Welcome to Virtual CELEBRATION 2024
Celebration, Sealaska Heritage’s biennial festival of Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures, has been held in Juneau, Alaska, every even year since 1982. After the Coronavirus pandemic caused the institute to postpone the in-person event for 2024, Sealaska Heritage organized its first-ever Virtual Celebration June 10-13 in an effort to bring people together online. The theme was “Have Courage,” a phrase commonly used to offer support and encouragement to one another during times of sadness or challenge. Virtual Celebration included dance performances from Celebration 2018 and new content such as videos of people telling stories, greetings from dance groups. and submissions from people around the region. The entire four-day broadcast can be viewed on Sealaska Heritage’s YouTube channel.
Virtual Celebration also marked the launch of SHI’s first online exhibit, the 10th biennial Northwest Coast Juried Art Show, which can be accessed below, along with our Indigenous Fashion Show and Toddler Regalia Review. For more on Sealaska Heritage and Celebration, visit www.sealaskaheritage.org.
